They thought they would be safer at home, 1997/2020

Title: They thought they would be safer at home
Attributed date: 1989
Attributed to: Yussef Bitar
Production date: 2020

Yussef Bitar, Lebanon's leading car bomb investigator during the Lebanese wars, attributed his forensic acuity less to his training in French, American and Egyptian military academies than to his passion for Oriental carpets.  This was confirmed after his death when the following notebook was found among his papers.

Throughout the war years, my father kept a diary in which he detailed the Lebanese pound's free fall, the price of construction materials, and the kinds of bombs that fell around his home.
